Ports and trade
The archipelago holds 9 ports, each with a town, a dock and a fort, flying the flag of England, France, Spain or Holland, or the black flag of the Brethren of the Coast. Between them lie wild islets with hidden coves, caves and treasure.
Nations
England, France, Spain and Holland begin at war with one another, and everyone hunts pirates. Their relations shift with border incidents and captains' deeds: wars are declared and treaties signed as the game goes on. Attack a nation and your standing with it falls; fall far enough and its forts open fire and its harbours close. Sinking its enemies wins favour, and a gift to the church can win a crown back.

Trading tips
- Buy where a good is made and sell where it is wanted: for example, silk from San Cristóbal sells well at Fort Dunmore.
- Spices and silk are the most valuable per ton; provisions and rum are cheap, but a crew needs them.
- The Commerce skill makes you buy cheaper and sell dearer.
- After dusk, smugglers on a cove's beach pay 40% over a colony's price for goods it does not make, and sell its own goods 30% under. Each deal risks a coast-guard patrol.
